An elephant conservationist responsible for bringing the mastermind behind a major ivory smuggling ring to justice has been murdered in Tanzania. Wayne Lotter, co-founder of the PAMS Foundation, was gunned down by two unknown men who opened the door of his taxi on his way to the airport in Dar es Salaam. Lotter had faced numerous death threats ever since his organization began using intelligence-based approaches to track down ivory poachers and smugglers two years ago.
Lotter is credited with having brought down one of the most notorious smugglers, Yang Feng Glan, the so-called “Queen of Ivory” who ran a $2.6-million ivory smuggling operation. His organization was also responsible for the arrest of over 1,000 ivory poachers since 2014.
The efforts of this heroic conservationist must not be in vain. Tanzania is still Africa’s largest exporter of ivory, and the fact remains that over 66,000 elephants were shot and killed by poachers over the past decade. Lotter’s fight will continue with his organization, but his killers must be found and punished.
